Root Canal Treatment

Save That Tooth!

Two of the most feared words in the English language are “root” and “canal”. Perhaps no other restorative dental procedure represents the apprehension so many feel when they go to the dentist. But those days are gone. Through his extensive training and commitment to patient comfort, Dr. Hussong takes the fear and discomfort out of root canals. Instead, we can now offer a safe and comfortable procedure to ensure the continued health and stability of your smile.

Why Would You Need a Root Canal?

Damage to the nerve tissue inside of a tooth sometimes requires a root canal procedure. If a tooth has a small crack, for instance, bacteria can infiltrate the tooth’s pulp, housed in the tooth’s canal, and cause an infection. The infection grows, creating pressure inside the tooth, and you’ll experience a severe toothache. Because the infection is inside the tooth’s canal, pulp in the canal must be removed. The only alternative is extracting the tooth. In addition to fractures, an untreated cavity or a large chip in the tooth can expose the sensitive inner tooth structure to harmful bacteria. Along with a toothache, patients with infections or dental abscesses may notice a fever, swelling around the tooth, a foul tasting discharge, and severe discomfort when biting down or chewing. To avoid extraction and keep your smile whole, you should see your Polk City dentist right if you notice these symptoms.

What Does a Root Canal Involve?

The procedure is relatively simple. First, Dr. Hussong will open the tooth and remove the infected tissue. The tooth and root canals will then be cleaned and disinfected. A special filing material will be placed in the tooth. Finally, the tooth will be sealed with a lifelike dental crown. The crown protects the remaining tooth structure while preventing further decay or infection. Once complete, a root canal returns your tooth to optimal health and appearance.

Do Root Canals Hurt?

We’re happy to report that root canals are quicker and less invasive than ever. In most cases, the procedure requires just one visit, so you can return to life as usual, just as you would after a filling or crown. Dr. Hussong takes advantage of technological advances and dental techniques that make root canal procedures highly effective and precise.
